Review: Zhai Bamboo Pants

Bamboo textile is fast stitching its way into the fashion industry. Known for its softness, this organic and eco-friendly fabric is softer than the softest cotton. Personally, I have always wanted to try bamboo clothing. Read 5 Benefits of Bamboo Clothing.

The problem is that it is not readily available in Singapore (yet!). The few times I have encountered bamboo clothing in Singapore is at a niche yoga or alternative lifestyle boutique (whose names I cannot remember) in passing. But what I do remember is the selection and sizing is often limited.

So you can imagine my surprise when Zhai, a local Singaporean company specializing in bamboo clothing, contacted me two months ago. Zhai carries a diverse collection of quality bamboo fabric clothing from casual wear, office wear and sportswear. And at reasonable prices.

Since I practice yoga, I wanted to give their bamboo pants a try. These casual 3/4 loose leggings are good for yoga, Pilates and traveling. Problem was – these pants are one of their bestsellers and were sold out at the time. So, I waited.

Two months later, the new shipment of pants have just arrived!

There were three main colors to choose from – black, quarry (grey) and nougat (cream). I choose the black pants with the mint green fabric belt layer.

The blend of bamboo viscose (95%) and spandex (5%) fabric is deliciously smooth and soft to the touch. When I have them on, it actually doesn’t feel like I’m wearing any pants at all.

When I first looked at the pants, I had only one concern: the waist/hip belt layer. You will notice it does not have an elastic waist band. It is just an extension of the black fabric in a different colored (mint green).

Being used to Lululemon’s thick and fitted waist/hip band of my regular yoga pants, I was concerned that these pants would come slip off easily or not hold to my hips during practice. But surprisingly, it was quite a nice change.

The pants fitted snugly. In fact, without the thick waist elastic band, I thought ‘how perfect are these pants for when I fall pregnant‘. It’s versatility is great (I think) for pregnant moms-to-be with their growing bellies without having to fumble with drawstrings and Velcro strips.

The fabric is so light it wore like second skin. A few nights ago, I wore them for my evening walk. The pants were cool to skin, and so comfortable – that it would be easy to forget I had any pants on! My husband, on the other hand, was battling with the humidity and breaking out in beads of sweat.

Every product purchased at Zhai comes with a card on the general benefits of bamboo clothing, as well as specific washing instructions.

I love the fact that I can throw these pants  into my laundry bag, and do a normal cold wash with the rest of my dark-colored clothes. Convenient, convenient, convenient.

I love these bamboo fabric pants because they:
♥ feel so soft!!!
♥ are lightweight – great for exercise and traveling
♥ absorbs moisture well  – great for my hot yoga sessions
have natural anti-bacterial, anti-fungal & anti-static properties – pants don’t cling & are odor-resistant so I don’t stink
♥ have natural UV protective agents
♥ helps to regulate body temperature – keeps body warm for cool temp, and cool for warm temp
♥ 100% biodegradable
♥ super easy to care – machine wash cold in delicate washing cycle (or simply put your bamboo clothing in a lingerie wash netted bag)

When compared to cotton, bamboo fabric beats it hands down. It is softer, lighter-weight and dries quicker. It is also more durable and versatile. Cheap cotton tends to go out of shape after a few washes or when stretched. Not bamboo.

If you’d like to try bamboo clothing, I recommend going down to Zhai’s retail boutique. There you can touch, feel and experience the fabric as I had described. You will know what I mean!

Zhai, is by far, the only boutique I have come across in Singapore that sells bamboo fabric clothing exclusively. And with a wide range of styles and colors to choose from.

Wait…There’s good news! Zhai is offering a one-off special 25% discount off all full-priced items, including new arrivals. Valid for the whole month of March 2013 – starting today!
