Review: Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask

Every once in a while, I discover a great hydrative facial mask. This is one of them.

Antipodes, a New Zealand organic skincare line, is a science-based company that uses 100% natural ingredients: of which 70-95% of the ingredients have to be certified organic and the remaining 5-30% of ingredients are governed by strict international criteria (depending on product type).

Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask is primarily formulated with manuka honey; known for its antibacterial properties and ability to draw moisture to skin. This is a traditional skin saving remedy of New Zealand’s Maori people. Blended with avocado oil, Vinanza Grapes’ seed extract (a breed of green grapes that independent study of New Zealand extracts have shown to increase skin’s elasticity and firmness), carrot oil and pohutukawa flower extract, this mask promises to deliver intense moisturizing and cleansing effect to skin. Suitable for all skin types, especially blemish-prone skin.

This is a cream-based face mask that you put on, leave for 20 minutes and rinse off. It comes in an aluminum tube that you squeeze like with toothpaste. I love this packaging because it makes the product dispensing easier to control. Just squeeze what you need. Also, when the mask is well-used, it is easy to roll the tail end up and squeeze out every last drop of cream leaving no waste before discarding.

Its thick yet smooth consistency spreads easily onto skin. I recently came back from holidays and got a tan on my face (despite wearing a wide brimmed hat – not happy!). The next day, I slathered a layer of this manuka honey mask and left it on for 40 minutes before rinse off. I applied a thicker layer on the super skin-tanned portions of my face like tip of my nose, forehead and cheekbones. It took two days for my complexion to blend together nicely for an even-tone without looking blotchy or patchy. A definite face saver.

The thing to note about this cream mask is – slap it on thick! I found it works great when I was generous with my application.

And the smell! The pohutukawa bloom, vanilla pod and mandarin extract makes this face cream so delicious to the nose. The scent is strong but natural smelling. Upon rinse off, my skin feel soft, plump and very smooth. It leaves skin feeling velvety and luxurious.

It does not come as a surprise that this mask was awarded Highly Commended Best Facial Mask by Natural Health Beauty Awards in 2015. Here is what one of the judges said,

“A very useful product. After applying it a couple of times a week it had calmed my skin, giving me a more even skin tone. I also applied it to individual blemishes overnight and it reduced any inflammation and redness; a trick I’ll definitely try again.”

One thing that bothers me is the lack of an expiry date. Nowhere on my tube indicates an expiry date for this mask which would be helpful. Being 100% natural, one can only assume to use the product within 6 months from opening. Good thing is one good-sized 75ml tub can last up to 6 months with regularly once a week use. In fact, the product label suggests biweekly usage.

This retails in Singapore from SGD$68 per tube and available at:
