Review: EmerginC Scientific Organics Phytocell Detox Mask

Stacked on a shelf amongst pure essential oil diffusers and luxury organic skincare at Takashimaya, are the green jars of EmerginC Scientific Organics. For months I have been wanting to try these promising jars of natural skincare for perfect complexion.

As a native New York brand, EmerginC Scientific Organics is an active, 100% natural, paraben-free, petrochemical-free, synthetic fragrance-free range of skincare. On top of that, every product contains a minimum of 70% organic ingredients; and for every product sold, a tree is planted. A corporate tree planting program to support the natural environment.

The first product I tried is EmerginC Scientific Organic’s Phytocell Detox Mask. This mask is designed to draw out impurities, nourish, soothe, brighten, fight radical-free damage and improve skin’s tone and texture.

Skin-detoxifying ingredients of French green mineral-rich clay and grape stem cells derived from the gamey grape of Burgundy; combined with algae extract, kombucha (a fermented tea known for its medicinal properties), glycerin, green tea, white tea and food grade seaweed, makes this mask effective and powerful. And sounds almost edible, doesn’t it?

How I used it: Apply a thick layer on entire face, avoiding eye area. I mean, thick! This product is meant to be layered on; not applied sparingly.  Look at the photo below. A thin layer (as seen on the left) does squat – absolutely nothing. You want to spread the mask thickly so that you see a distinct layer of green clay.  This will enhance the drawing power of the clay on your skin.

I used this three times a week for two weeks. For my sensitive/combination skin, I left the mask on for no more than 10 mins before rinsing off. For oilier skin types, you can leave it on for a little longer, up to 15 mins.

TIP: The longer you leave this mask on, the drier your skin will likely be. So, if your skin feels too dry after, immediately followup with a hydrating serum or moisturiser.

On first impressions: Smells delicious. This mask has a strong lemon citrusy scent. Unlike other clay masks, the product’s consistency is quite dense – kinda like moist compact mud. It also has quite a bite; could feel the ingredients activating the moment it comes in contact with my face. This sensation lessens gradually with subsequent use (or maybe I got used to it).

Result: Intense detox drawing power! The day after using this mask (and after a hot yoga session), I noticed small white heads emerging around the corners of my nose. Gross but a good sign. I had an instant urge to slap on a pore strip and rip the suckers out!!

Instead, I ignored the whiteheads and continued to mask my face two more times that same week. By the end of the week, I finally used my own pore strip product and this is what I pulled out! See all those ‘dots’ on the white tissue sheet…those are whiteheads, blackheads and tiny oil seeds. Some are so big they even cast a shadow. Yucks.

If I had one point to note, it would be the product’s expiry. Although clearly stated on the box, it is not on the jar. So, before throwing out the box, take note of the date. This is a minor point though because if you use this product regularly (and you should), it will last about 2-3 months – well before the expiry date.

The good thing about EmerginC Scientific Organics Singapore at Takashimaya, Ngee Ann City, is the very knowledgable and friendly sales reps like Ginny, Princess and Alice.
