Review: Sukin Natural Deodorant

I don’t have B.O. (body odor). So, I know things are bad when I am at a meeting and as I raise my arm to illustrate a point on the board, I am knocked out by a pungent sharp garlicky smell. Even though it is just me in an arm’s length proximity, the embarrassment was hard to hide with my sudden flushed cherry red face.
So, here we go again. Back on the hunt for a natural deodorant. So far, my luck with natural deodorants has been dismal, with the exception of Human Nature’s 100% natural deodorant. But like everything else, it ran out. Instead of replacing it with a new bottle (seeing I don’t have a body odor problem), I have been going deodorant-less since. Until now.

After that tracks-stopping meeting, I left work and went to the neighborhood organic store to check out their natural deodorant selection. They only stock Sukin Natural Deodorant. So naturally, this is what I got.

The good news is: This Australian-owned and made natural spray deodorant is free of aluminum and paraben, amongst many other things such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLE), synthetic fragrances, animal derivatives, Proplene Glycol, Triethanolamine, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and mineral oils.

A refreshing blend of tangerine, mandarin and lavender oils, combined with vanilla extract, this deodorant kills odor-causing bacteria without harsh chemical ingredients and is suitable for all skin types.

Here is my review.

When I spray this deodorant on my armpits, it smells like I’m spraying concentrated orange juice instead. The aromatic sweetness masks the smell of sweat nicely.

Personally, I am not used to the spray concept. I prefer the roll-on type of application. But after a while, the spray application is not so bad. On the first few initial sprays, you may feel a little watery on the armpits. But the liquid gets absorbed into the skin and evaporates within a minute or two. After that, armpits remain completely dry for the rest of the day.

If there is anything I like about this deodorant is that it does last very long. Some natural deodorants are not strong enough and you have to reapply several times throughout the day. But with this natural deodorant, I usually apply it first thing in the morning before I go to work, and I’m good until my bedtime shower.

It does not leave any residue under armpit folds or burn the skin. This is interesting given that alcohol is listed as number 3 on the ingredients list.

If you have ultra sensitive skin, be a little more caution when trying this. Having said that, I do not see how this deodorant can be more irritating to your skin than using a chemically-manufactured one.

Lastly, I have not smelt any garlic or onions under my armpits since using this.

Retail price: S$14.90 per 125ml

I bought this at Yes Natural Pte Ltd. I have also seen them on the shelves of most organic and natural health foods shop.
